The New Bedford Whaling Museum is hosting 3 events in conjunction with the 2015 NCECA conference. Of Earth and Sea: Artists Respond to the New Bedford Whaling Museum Collection, an exhibition of contemporary ceramics, opens on March 12th and will be up until the end of August. Eight area artists: Chris Archer, Mary Barringer, Cynthia Consentino, Molly Hatch, Sergei Isupov, Kathy King, Jim Lawton, and Seth Rainville, were invited to visit the Museum and create new works in response to pieces in the museum collection. Vessels, opens simultaneously and will highlight favorite pieces from the Museum’s ceramics collection.
On March 21st and March 22nd, Of Earth, Sea and Fire: A Symposium of Makers will be held in the museum’s auditorium. The artists from the exhibition Of Earth and Sea, as well as other noted ceramicists will come together for a weekend of lively discussion about contemporary ceramics. Presentations will provide insight into the artists’ technical and conceptual processes.
The symposium will feature lectures by Dan Anderson, John Balistreri, Sergei Isupov, Kathy King, Jim Lawton, Seth Rainville and Elenor Wilson and demonstrations by Doug Casebeer, Cynthia Consentino, Molly Hatch, Jan McKeachie Johnston, Randy Johnston, and Matt Long.
