NCECA’s 2020 partners for Artist in Residence are at C.R.E.T.A Rome, Italy and the Medalta, Medicine Hat in Alberta, Canada
Jessica Brandl participated in a residency partnership between C.R.E.T.A Rome and NCECA and shared her experience:
“This residency in the heart of Rome confronted me with history unlike anything I have ever known. The inspiring setting made me reconsider all of what I make, the culture I make it in, and the distribution of the items I will produce. Connecting with ceramic history was my objective while in-residence; founder’s Paolo and Lori Ann were very instrumental in helping with my travels. They provided the social geography to help guide me to the best museums for the types of things I was researching. What was most important for me about this residency was how important it is to be out in Rome, experiencing the timeless yet vibrant city. I came away with a reserve of amazing encounters that I am still thinking through in my studio today.”
The C.R.E.T.A (ceramics residences exhibitions teaching & the arts) Rome international residencies for ceramicists include a semi-private equipped studio, accommodation in the historical center of Rome, and technical assistance in procuring materials for ceramic work, firings, etc., advice on museums, galleries and sites in Rome and beyond. The final group show gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their work produced during the residency. Optional excursions to museums, sites in Rome and Italy may also be arranged.
Shared studios are provided in a mid 16th-century palace in the historical center of Rome, just blocks from the Capitoline hill and the Jewish quarter. Artists will have access to the studios 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Internet and printing/scanning facilities are available. There are individual work tables and shelving units. There are electric kilns and wheels plus a broad range of equipment and tools for working with clay including ceramic wheels, an extruder and a slab-roller. We will arrange for all the material which you require to be delivered to the studio and provide technical advice in glazing, firing, etc. Housing is provided in the historical centre of Rome or across the river in Trastevere, within 15 minutes walking distance of the creta rome studios and are well connected to public transportation. The apartments give artists an opportunity to experience a typical Italian neighborhood, as well as to discover all the best places for pasta, pastries, and gelato.
