If you’ve been to an NCECA conference before, you already know the allure of the Resource Hall. If you haven’t been, you’ll soon find out. That room seems to be the source of a temporal anomaly, because hours pass like minutes and before you know it, you hear the announcement telling you it’s 5:00 and the Resource Hall is closing.
Situated around the frenzy that is created by the commercial exhibit booths are the slightly more relaxed non-profit and institutional tables. You’ll want to schedule some time to visit with these folks as well. You can find some interesting start-up organizations such as The Marks Project, which will be introducing the new website themarksproject.org. and signing up makers. This site will allow makers to register their marks allowing researchers to accurately identify the makers of an object. You can also chat with the Italians and give your dream of travelling to Italy a chance at the LA MERIDIANA – International School of Ceramics in Tuscany – find some Mediterranean flair at table T53! Meanwhile, back in the United States, Northern Clay Center presents 20 Minnesota and Wisconsin artists for a “Local’s We Love” show and sale in the gallery expo area. Kip O’Krongly and Ursula Hargens will speak about their work; many of the other artists represented will be on hand to talk about their pots. Additionally, select collaborative “Exquisite Pots” and the catalogue from NCC’s 2013 exhibition will be available for sale. You might also learn about the $20,000 Zanesville Prize (September 27 – October 12, 2014) is the largest Best of Show prize in ceramics in the Western Hemisphere. In addition a conference with demonstrations by John Balistreri, Terri Kern, Ken McCollum, Tom Radca, Jeremy Randall, and Gail Russell will take place from October 10 – 12, 2014.
